Breastfeeding Photos Deleted by Facebook!

Breastfeeding Photo A

One of these things is not like the other.

Last night, Facebook sent Earth Mama’s Facebook page a WARNING that a picture in our photo strip had been removed because it apparently “violated the Terms of Use (see above). Facebook does not allow photos that “attack an individual or group, or that contain nudity, drug use, violence, or other violations of the Terms of Use. These policies are designed to ensure Facebook remains a safe, secure and trusted environment for all users, including the many children who use the site.”

In order to access the Earth Mama Facebook page, we had to acknowledge that we read and understood the warning.

And here’s what we found when we got there. One, but not both, of the breastfeeding pictures on the photo strip had been deleted. Gone. Kaput. Huh? Why that one? This can’t be right, right? There were two breastfeeding photos in the photo strip, so that can’t be the reason it was removed. And Facebook has publicly stated it is not “cracking down” on breastfeeding photos.

Breastfeeding Photo B

Still, they deleted Photo A and left Photo B. We tried to figure out the difference between the two. Here’s what we came up with.

  • Both women are clearly breastfeeding their babies.
  • One shows cleavage, the other does not.
  • One woman’s baby is latched, the other is not.
  • The tiniest bit of nipple is visible on one photo, in the other photo the nipple is covered by the baby’s hand.
  • Oh wait! Could it be? One woman is black, one woman is white.

Earth Mama always has supported women breastfeeding their babies. Babies get hungry. And breasts feed babies. We don’t consider either photo obscene. Each shows a human baby having lunch. We intend to repost the picture on Facebook once we get an explanation from them. We support ALL mamas as they breastfeed their babies, and we support breastfeeding photos depicting mamas and babies of all races, sizes, shapes and ages.

Why do you think this happened?

UPDATE: With all the ridiculousness about deleting breastfeeding photos from Facebook, I personally contacted Facebook [twice] to find out why they took down Earth Mama’s photos. I received one automated response. We are still working on getting them to clarify their policy and to make a distinction between breastfeeding and obscenity. Thank you for your amazing support! XO, Mama

P.S. Mama’s NOT happy. She doesn’t consider herself a militant. Or a lactavist.  But now she’s mad. Brace yourself.  >> Read more.

I understand that if someone makes a complaint, Facebook will react and remove photos. I have a friend who’s fighting this as well for his Breast Cancer Awareness Body Painting Project. His solution was to attempt to reason with FB. So far so good. I think he’s on his third try after they deleted all the pictures twice.

  • Smacil

i don’t personally think its a black and white thing photo “b” shows less of the chest area and thats probibly why..i don’t have a problem wih either photo, just thinking that a child without looking closely may not even know that the baby in photo”b” is nursing…its clear that not just one but two breast are present in photo”a”. I am a breatfeeding momma myself and I think the pictures are beautiful :)

    • kendra

wow ur daft you can see areola in pic B. I am not one to spuriously play the race card but let’s examine this.
By FB standards pic B would way more offensive. The areola is clearly visible along with clevage. In pic A though you can see both brests no nipple or areola is visible in anyway. Pic A was deletd due to a black family being depicted.
I do apologize if you are offendd that racial bias still exists in the world but pretending that has nothing to due with this particuar instance is naive at best and supportive of the actions at worst.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1258098152 Leslie Terry Westenhaver

I’ve had several of my own breastfeeding photos removed by FB because there was simply a breast in the picture. How they choose which to remove and which to keep is beyond me, but ALL breastfeeding photos are simply beautiful to me and it upsets me that FB is helping to keep breastfeeding taboo in our society. I hope that no more of your photos are deleted! Both pictures are just wonderful!

  • Amanda

Usually when a photo is removed it has been reported to Facebook as offensive. Facebook needs to check photos which are reported as offensive and if it is a breastfeeding photo leave it alone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/wendy.armbruster.bell Wendy Armbruster Bell

I agree with Amanda. The only explanation is a knee-jerk reaction to a complaint. Facebook needs to write a clear policy that covers ALL images on Facebook that show breasts, not just the ones of breastfeeding. If they wrote and published a policy, it would be so much easier to a) abide by their policy and b) fight if an image was taken down in error. Currently, the removal of pictures is completely random which is very frustrating!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NZZDW2IV7MYQFFPHWMQJMGZLAU Britt

I honestly think there is confusion within Facebook and their own policies in regards to what they feel they are “protecting” and what is “offensive”. Breastfeeding is a beautiful, natural part of life. It’s unfortunate they made the decision to delete one of these photos, but its okay for a teenager or young adult to take pictures of themselves in mirrors in teeny bikinis or with massive cleavage hanging out.

  • MamaKazoola

When has FB EVER been concerned about “the many children that use our site” FB is NOT for children. It is clearly stated that you are supposed to be 13 to use FB. If this isn’t a normal beautiful picture for a 13 year old to view I’m not sure what is.I am upset that FB doesn’t seem to have a problem with the nude party photos that are all over FB but this sweet picture is deleted? I agree with Wendy FB needs to write a policy and abide by it. So sad, I LOVE this picture HUGS Mama!

    • Brennagutell

If facebook was really concerned they would remove all the photos of the scatilly clad hoochies all throughout the site

  • http://profiles.google.com/beagleandbabies Jamie O.

It’s interesting that most states have laws and federal laws exist to protect a woman’s right to breastfeed. For New York that stands even if the nipple or any part of the breast is exposed because of breastfeeding but facebook yanks breastfeeding photos left and right. Facebook can suck it… literally and figuratively.

    • Bryan Foksinski

First off how old are you?? “suck it” are you a child or a grown woman?.. I have no problem with breastfeeding but like most of us have said we really don’t want to see your boobs hanging out in the public eye. Don’t you have any self respect or for your child? If you have a problem with FB and their rules on nudity then delete your FB account. FB is a social network meant for just that… it’s supposed to be a family based site I know, but frankly I wouldn’t like my child to be surfing their friends profiles and come across a picture of a woman breastfeeding…

      • Singingmama

I think the use of “suck it” was a play on words. Most of “us” haven’t agreed with your viewpoint. Two of you have. Maybe you shouldn’t allow your child to surf facebook. It’s a social network only for people ages 13 and up, so I wouldn’t really call it family friendly necessarily. If you have a problem with breastfeeding pictures you could delete YOUR profile, or block people who post them, rather than force your extreme modesty on others. How is public breastfeeding showing a lack of self respect? I think it’s showing a great respect for your child, who needs his needs met regardless of location. I don’t find it very respectful of a child’s wishes when he has to eat in a bathroom or have his face smothered under a blanket when he’s trying to eat. But you feel free to cover your head with a blanket if it bothers you.

      • Anne

In public you’re more than welcome to avert your eyes when a mother is engaging in the act of nourishing her child. This is even more so the case on FB-no one forces a FB user to click on breastfeeding pictures! I’ve done a lot of work in Latin America teaching mothers there about the benefits of breastfeeding and attempting to reduce the negative stigma it has, but I never imagined that such a progressive company in such a modern country could respond like this to something so simple, natural, and beautiful. If posting these pictures helps to reduce the stigma associated with breastfeeding even the smallest amount, it is WELL worth the slight discomfort of a few people snooping on people’s FB pictures.

  • Proudmama

Breast feeding is a normal natural thing for most mama. It is not something that we should hind. I am a breast feeding mama and proud of it. These pictures are showing true beauty.

  • http://www.organicbabyuniversity.com Jennifer

And to see what teenagers post up…what in the world?? I wonder if a complaint was filed? Which of course in ludicrous! Go get ‘em I say! They obviously can’t tell the difference between indecency and nature

  • Chriswilliams79

Interesting that fb allows people to call themselves whatever they dream up (sorry Cumswalla Goatfelcher, I’m sure you’re a nice person, but that can’t be the name on your birth certificate) but when we share our photos of nurturing our babies, somebody’s hair bursts into flames and the pictures must come down! There needs to be a more fair and reasonable way to meet everyone’s need not to be offended…

  • Katie

That baby isn’t white… She is mixed.

I think it is because she is latched. The ridiculousness that is Facebook never ceases to amaze me.

  • Katie

  • Cmmiller0580

seriously, there are people on facebook showing a lot more breast than that

  • Maggie

how ridiculous, it is the most natural thing in the world, there not just for selling cars and beer…..this is actually what the breast is for

    • FreakyBoobMan

      Don’t forget t-tty f-cking.

  • Anonymous

Terrible. Don’t any dads who have BF babies work there or moms that BF? Seriously.

    • http://www.blacktating.com Elita @ Blacktating

Moms? Dads? I don’t think there is anyone over the age of 25 working at Facebook. These are all very young, fresh-out-of-college folks.

  • Momrnlc

So sick of people being so ignorant. Seriously.

  • http://evilslutopia.com EvilSlutClique

Facebook also recently deleted a (totally tasteful and beautiful) photo of a pregnant woman because it was apparently “obscene” as well:

  • MamaKruse

I think there are people out there who are so opposed to breastfeeding that they will do anything within their power to remove anything about it from public view. I guess their theory is ignorance is bliss, but really ignorance is pure stupidity.

I have pictures posted of me nursing my son, so far I’ve not gotten any flack. I seriously wonder whether or not what’s going through people’s minds as they purposely seek out photos of COMPLETELY NATURAL lifestyles.

How do people think babies were feed pre-formula?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • http://twitter.com/alfmom22 Amy Farrell

Oy. Why are people not understanding that this is not obscene, but a beautiful portrayal of Mom and baby. Argh.

  • Joe Criso

This is ridiculous, Mad Mama Melinda?! I wish there were moreAMAZING companies like yours, pictures like these, and mamas & organizations like everyone supporting you here for my Mama when she had me – She would have had the information, inspiration, and social support to breastfeed me as a baby!!! All these years and technological breakthroughs later and its sad to see people with small minds and personal agendas are still interfering with mother & child. If this was the 1st time I had heard of this situation, I would suggest giving them the benefit of doubt and chalk it up as a possible misunderstanding. This is not cool on many levels. And it is not wise to mess with Mama!!!
    Sending you love & support!
    Joe

  • http://www.deliciousobsessions.com Jessica @ Delicious Obsessions

You know, I am really, really sick of all the people who cannot seem to disconnect breastfeeding and sexual activity. I think as a society, we are really messed up. Just because it involves a woman’s breasts does not make it sexual. As a matter of fact, I personally feel that the breasts were created for feeding offspring first and foremost, and as a sexual “organ” later. Maybe that’s just my skewed view.

I think those images are beautiful and there is nothing more precious and sacred than breastfeeding a baby.

    • Sheri

Meh, I can think of a ton of things more precious than a breastfeeding baby – a puppy, a kitten, money gift basket, rainbows – it’s just a kid eating. There is no need to get all ‘precious’ about it.

  • Stunt_warrior

Well,i am trying to keep Abreast of things.

  • Lcstange77

Thanks for the link to give our feedback. I wrote this to them:

I cannot believe that with all of the true indecent pictures people post that you would select pictures of mothers feeding their babies a picture of “nudity” and delete them! Please, strongly consider revising your rules around this. A human breast that is feeding a baby is NOT a sexual image and if someone believes it is, they need to take a look at history of mankind.

  • Holamendoza

Unfortunately, I don’t think this is a concerted effort by “anti breastfeeding” activists. It reflects our twisted relationship with a woman’s body. Its just stupid.

  • http://profiles.google.com/alisonwestermann A W

This is what I wrote to FB:

From the WHO website: “Breastfeeding is the normal way of providing young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. Virtually all mothers can breastfeed, provided they have accurate information, and the support of their family, the health care system and society at large.”

When Facebook uses indiscriminate logic in removing photographs from group pages that focus on breastfeeding support, it contributes (whether on purpose or unintentionally) to American society’s demonization of mothers in general and breastfeeding in particular.

I’m not advocating for a change in the Terms of Use, I’m asking that it be used appropriately and wisely – breastfeeding, no matter who is in the picture or how much nipple is or is not showing, is not obscene. It is simply a photo of a child eating a meal, much as a grown child would be featured in a photograph, smiling behind a huge birthday cake.

Please reconsider the decision to delete any breastfeeding photographs. It’s ridiculous that I even have to ask.

  • Verna Kitson

It’s about race. The second picture was decidedly more ‘salacious’, from the perspective of folks who don’t like the idea of breastfeeding, let alone a picture of it. Look at how excited that baby is (insert stupid boy’s fantasy about slurping all over some woman’s breasts). The first picture packs an emotional wallop – the first response for many is going to be recoil & disgust. The very idea of a ‘white’ baby sucking a ‘black’ woman’s breast just doesn’t ‘seem’ right. Which makes me question why YOU put the picture up in the first place. What point were you trying to make? You are smart and savvy enough to know that there’s an ugly history that’s going to be invoked – especially for Black women – the work being done with the visuals is enough. How different is this from the Benetton ad from the 1994-5? So, FB needs to offer an explanation, but so do you.

    • Sksfederico

Actually that IS a black baby. She/he is just lightskinned. :(

    • http://twitter.com/DaTinjunBLOOD Meka Blizzard Robnja

Really? I think that only came to your mind. PS- Im sure the baby is black.

  • El Roco

Facebook denies ALL photos that are nude in nature so it does not have to delineate the difference. It’s a mass policy because there are millions if users and there are always a few people that want special treatment. Congrats. That’s you. Your the people demanding special treatment. thanks for ruining the Internet and using up all the hot water

    • Jenny

You couldn’t be more wrong. Have you been on Facebook? There is actual porn on Facebook.

    • http://twitter.com/SunnyMama831 Sunny

Facebook’s official policy re:breastfeeding photos is only if nipple is visible. It does not deny all photos that are nude. You are wrong.

  • Amber H

I hink it’s wrong that BF pics are getting deleted, but what’s stupid is that out of the two pics, the second one if you HAD to get all technical about it is “more obscene” because areola is showing. My friend who’s a cop said under indecent exposure laws, showing areola in public -nursing a baby or not- will get you a ticket; I think the same rules apply online. It’s dumb, and changes have to be made.

I really do think it’s racially motivated, which is pretty lametastic in my book.

    • Jenny

I’m sorry, but I think in this instance, your friend may be wrong. Unfortunately, even cops are ignorant of breastfeeding laws sometimes.

  • Kattkreations

way way back when (3 years ago actually)
i uploaded the pics from when my son was born
there was one with him breastfeeding that got taken down. and i also had to acknowledge the warning.

funny that i still remember that..

  • http://www.wombinbloom.co.nz Wombinbloom

we hadseveral photos refused before they accepted one for our page….we do maternity wear and they will not let our logo be used in advertising at all on FB yet it is our logo – crazy too! go for it mama!!!! http://www.wombinbloom.co.nz

    • Wombinbloom

oops meant to add(before i pressed post!) that ours is a photo of a beautiful pregnant woman…a celebration of the maternal form in all its glory….

  • Dan

I’m a fan of breastfeeding and think breastfeeding photos shouldn’t be deleted. However, if Facebook’s Terms of Use clearly state that nudity is not allowed, then what is all the fuss about? No nudity means no nudity.

Trying to determine why photo “a” was deleted and why photo “b” wasn’t deleted is simply a waste of time. If you ran a website that had millions of photos uploaded everyday, it would be impossible to police. Facebook has face-recognition software that works pretty good (but isn’t perfect). They probably have “nude-recognition” software too. It probably caught photo “a” and didn’t catch photo “b”. There are probably thousands of breastfeeding photos that “slip” through, while the majority get “caught” by the “nude-recognition” software.

    • Apricot

I agree with Dan. I had one photo out of 5 photos deleted from my facebook, all were pretty much the same type of photo of my baby’s birth via c-section.

    • M Bazan

Breastfeeding is not nudity. If you are nude in public you can get arrested. If you breastfeed you can’t.

      • http://twitter.com/mcmama McMama

It is if you’re, um, nude. The woman in the top photo obviously is, or at least topless. You can breastfeed in public, but you can’t be topless, as a woman (which is a whole other topic).

        • http://twitter.com/DaTinjunBLOOD Meka Blizzard Robnja

They both look topless to me.

        • Singingmama

That’s not universally true. In Columbus, OH for example, women can be topless too. Most don’t exercise it, except during the pride parade for some reason, but there it is.

      • http://twitter.com/mcmama McMama

It is if you’re, um, nude. The woman in the top photo obviously is, or at least topless. You can breastfeed in public, but you can’t be topless, as a woman (which is a whole other topic).

    • Aislynn

Nudity = graphic. There is no more exposure in those photos than in the album of a sorority girl on spring break.

    • Boardbuddie

Dan, a while a large group of people tried to get a very offensive pic of a nude penis deleted. It is still there. And that has happened before. While it is clearly against their policy. Double standard, much?

    • Singingmama

Is it nudity when a girl wears a skimpy bikini or covers herself with her hands? Because those pics exist. Is it nudity when a man is topless? Technically he’s partially nude. The double standard is exasperating. Do naked feet count as nudity? What about the pictures of little girls in booty shorts turned around so that the camera is taking a picture of their bums? Those kinds of things ARE sexual in nature, where as breastfeeding is beautiful and quite possibly the sweetest thing in the world.

  • Leesa

Really in today’s day and age is this REALLY what someone finds offensive…..it’s a natural act between a mother and child and the child’s need for food. This issue in the scheme of the worlds issue’s isn’t even an issue. I see worse things on V Channel on FOXTEL each day…..Sad and disappointed that each photo isn’t individually assessed for what it is. A Natural ACT……:(

  • Bryan foksinski

I agree wholeheartedly with Dan with a twist…the best feeling in the world for a father is to watch his newborn feeding and bonding with mom..however…it is and should remain a private time with family…methinks that was FB take on it…the racial crap is just that..mindless crap…breastfeeding is wonderful for all INVOLVED…best to keep all INVOLVED as special PRIVATE family time. We all urinate..its very satisfying and natural for all but i wouldn’t post pics of me peeing…rules are rules…enjoy your new family additions and lets get over it…privately.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Amber-Pelton/566141680 Amber Pelton

did you seriously just compare breastfeeding to urinating? that’s ignorant

      • Anonymous

Why? They are both natural human actions, both liquids coming out of your body. I am definitely pro-breast feeding, but seriously – no one wants to see your boob out in public. Natural and beautiful to you and your husband. Not to me. Cover it up.

        • Shirleythomason

Cover OK but should not have to go to a restroom to breastfeed your baby.

      • Bryan Foksinski

Didn’t compare them Amber..merely pointed out that BOTH are private matters hun…think !

        • Singingmama

In your opinion both are private matters “hun” (Dear Lord can we please be less condescending???). In my mind, one is the body releasing waste, and another is the best, and most nutritious form of food for human babies. Apples and oranges.

      • Jonnimarie_15

Are you seriously such a low-brow you cant read and comprehend basic English structure?? Ignorant???? not even being used in the correct context…if your going to insult someone honey please use correct punctuation and be educated on the subject that your discussing.

    • http://www.facebook.com/clarkmo Maureen Clark

it’s people like you who are making breastfeeding in public difficult for people like me.

      • Bryan Foksinski

Why do you feel that way?…my wife can grocery shop and change a flat tire while breast feeding..she just doesnt put pics in face book while she does it.

    • M Bazan

Do you eat your big mac in public!? :O Shame on you!

      Come on!!

    • Michael

I’m with you Amber.. Seriously Bryan.. Unrinating?? And it can’t always be private. When baby has to eat, he/she has to eat, and sometimes that happens when you’re not at home. With all those baby formulas out there, young women are being taught that it’s ok to not breast feed. Research has shown breast feeding has numerous health and psycological advantages over formulas for both mom and baby. Breast feeding pictures promote breast feeding. High five to all you breast feeding moms who flaunt it!

  • SyvannahJ

I completely agree with you. I think it is very sad that our society has gotten to the place where breasts are a sexual object. They can be shown in movies, on the internet, laced and decorated for television commercials, yet if a baby is using it for what God created it to do we feel uncomfortable. It’s a terrible situation when a mother feels as though she can not provide in a normal, natural way to provide for her baby for fear of what others might “feel” or “think”. It sickens me that this is an issue and I hope that enough nursing mothers will rise and make a stand.

  • Melanie

i am pregnant and plan on breast feeding my baby but come on, i don’t want someone taking my pic. If you want to see a pic of my baby, take it while i’m not feeding him. ugh!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Amber-Pelton/566141680 Amber Pelton

you might change your mind about no pics once that baby gets here. Just sayin.

    • Rlhuntz

Melanie, you may want to reconsider. I never allowed anyone to take a picture of me while breastfeeding my babies, and I really do regret that now. I have pictures of them doing everything except nursing and that was one of the most precious times of our lives.

    • http://twitter.com/SunnyMama831 Sunny

You may change your mind. I would urge you to consider it once your child is here. Even if just for yourself.

I am with you Mama! This is not right! The first photo showed NO NIPPLE.. therefor no violation was committed.
    http://www.mummiesnummies.com/2011/04/earth-mama-angel-baby-photos-deleted-by.html

  • Claire

Yes breastfeeding is beautiful and natural, but it’s also private. Why does someone need to post pics of this intensely bonding and wonderful time?

    • Jenny

There are all kinds of pics with babies formula feeding. Should those be taken down too? Eating is eating.

    • http://twitter.com/SunnyMama831 Sunny

Why not? Babies are fed everywhere with bottles no? Are those photos something that need to be kept private as well? I don’t consider breastfeeding ‘private’. It is something I do openly and am proud to. I’m taking care of my child, nurturing them. I also do it dozens of times a day? Why wouldn’t I want photos of that? Why wouldn’t I want to share that?

  • P M

I nurse my daughter and my older daughter was nursed as well, I am all about nursing and it being natural and beautiful. However I don’t understand why half naked photos need to be shared with the world? I am sorry but I don’t think either of these pictures need to be posted. There are some who would appreciate and see it like it should be seen as natural and beautiful, but there are some who would make it sexual or worse. I feel you should keep private photos private and agree that FB has rules for a reason and one was deleted over the other because they are only deleted when someone complains.

  • stacyh

Dan, it’d be one thing if it were applied to all instances of nudity. But it’s not. They think nothing of huge t*t type pictures with tons of cleavage. Add a baby, regardless of how much is showing(check out some of the pictures that have been deleted some time- you can’t even see ANY breast at all and they’re still removed) and it’s suddenly obscene. Breastfeeding is normal, not something to be ashamed about and hide. Facebook needs to update their stance on breastfeeding photos or at least, apply the ‘rule’ fairly across the board.

  • P M

I don’t think this has anything to do with trying to take a monthers choice to breastfeed away, I don’t think it has anything to do with race either O think it is about the nudity. Why do we have to work it up, deconstruct and make it bigger then it is? Someone saw the picture, was offended by the nudity and reported it. FB did what it always does in this case and deleted it. They don’t make exceptions there is a rule about nudity in photos thats all it is. EWhy do we have to make a mountin out of a molehill here?

    • http://twitter.com/SunnyMama831 Sunny

Actually that is not the case. Facebook’s OFFICIAL policy re: breastfeeding photos as of 2009 is that they only consider photo that show nipples inappropriate and will remove them. Pictures of women in bathing suits with more skin showing than some of the breastfeeding photos have been reported but do not get removed. It is an inconsistent policy that needs to be reviewed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/clarkmo Maureen Clark

It is illegal for Facebook to take down/denounce breastfeeding photos in the states where breastfeeding is excluded under public nudity laws. Check your facts people! http://www.ncsl.org/default.aspx?tabid=14389

  • http://www.photocarddesign.com Renee Horsman

I don’t think it has anything to do with race. Facebook isn’t going around looking through entire folders. They respond to complaints, or see individual photos that come through feeds. My best guess is that they got a complaint on that photo and removed it. Doesn’t make it right or fair, but I truly doubt that race played any kind of determining factor in their decision.

  • Lea

Two new pics on FB just for you EM:

In support of Earth Mama Angel…and who says #breastfeeding in 1971 wasn’t normal http://on.fb.me/gvvAes. Can you say COLOSTRUM!

In suport of Earth Mama Angel Baby http://on.fb.me/h5Imnx Who says #breastfeeding isn’t normal?

  • http://profiles.google.com/zahramhd Zahra Muhammed

So sad in a day and age where its acceptable to have racy half naked photos of people all over facebook but a breastfeeding photo triggers cause for concern, defiantly a double standard in this supposed new found “breast is best” world – yet the majority of people are still freaked out about it.

  • Social engineering

This issue was discussed at length when a homosexual group event and a (2 men kissing) photo was removed.

These items are not targeted by Facebook. Someone that has access to see the photos has clicked “report”. Everything after that is automated.

Do you have a completely benign photo of a puppy in the group photo album? Have someone click “report” and see what happens – the same thing as the breastfeeding shot.

Campaign Facebook to stop automated removals.
Campaign facebook to hold “report” clickers accountable for abusing the reporting function.
But Facebook is not targeting any group. People have found a loophole or “hack” (since that word gets misused 12 ways to Tuesday) to have content removed that they dont agree with.

    • janet

If removals are automated, why did the penis pic I referred to above not get deleted? (= genuine question)

    • http://profiles.google.com/kkrohnert Kelley Krohnert

I know people at Facebook and the removals are not automated. Flagged photos are brought to a human’s attention to review, and clearly a lot of the reviewers are more than happy to delete certain photos, even if they don’t violate the TOS. Facebook says that breastfeeding photos are only in violation if nipple is showing, but plenty of photos are removed that don’t show any nipple at all. And other more sexual photos of nudity are left untouched, even after repeated reports, because the reviewers don’t mind seeing _those_ pictures. It sucks, and I don’t think it’s targeted, but it’s also not automated.

  • Guest

Breastfeeding is no more private than me eating ice cream is. When my son nurses, he’s eating. Sure we bond, but at his age now it’s more about eating (he’s 12 months) than it is about anything else. He likes to eat quick so he doesn’t miss anything. I love taking photos on him nursing, I take photos of everything else from playing to bathing. I share my photos proudly as well. I wish more women would share photos and nurse in public so it wouldn’t be such a big deal and people would get use to it.

  • Joanne

I think the true reason Men see breasts as sexual objects in the first place is a primal inner-knowledge that they will support their offspring! The covers of magazines in the shop (at children’s eye level no less) are far worse than seeing a baby have something to drink. Breastfeeding does NOT count as nudity!

  • Proudpapa2010

You stupid housewives need to get a hobby. One that doesn’t include telling people how they should act, think or feel. Better yet, instead of spending hours online finding things to complain about, spend some quality time with your kids.

  • Jennifer Buske

If the law can protect us breast feeding in public, then they should protect us on this matter. It’s a mother’s right and a birthright to all babies.

  • Lderbez

“Why is facebook objecting to breastfeeding photos, breastfeeding support pages and breast cancer support pages, but not Playboy and other pages that show explicit photos without a breastfeeding baby in it? Is is really about decency or just making sure that breasts are portrayed as sexual and not a food source?” I think money is involved of course: Playboy pays $, NursingFormula Companies are interested in that breastfeeding doesnt become popular and of course the also pay $. But its good that people coment about it so all this comes out to the public.

  • BFMomma

This is really sad. Really really sad. But I can certainly relate. For some reason, breastfeeding photos are still unacceptable to several in our society. And even more puzzling and disturbing, breastfeeding picture of AA women are even less acceptable so it seems. Just really sad. Perhaps with time and exposure to images such as this, society will come to see breastfeeding as a norm for ALL women because it is just that – perfectly normal!

    • HRoss

      WOW, what a gorgeous picture!!

    • http://profiles.google.com/popita624 Emily VanEssen

      i love the pictureyou posted

    • Bryan Foksinski

See this is exactly what I’m talking about discreet and classy!

      • Singingmama

There is nothing discreet about this picture. She is bold and putting her pride in her own body and her child and her choice out there for the world. This is the opposite of discreet! I love the picture, but I wouldn’t in any way call it discreet!

  • Abattyref

I have seen lots and lots of pages and articles about Facebook deleting beautiful breastfeeding photos. I adore the photos and really wish I had taken some with my son. While I don’t condone the removal of the images, I don’t believe it has anything to do with how Facebook feels about breastfeeding. They have protocols in place to alert them of photos containing any of the items listed in their Terms of Use. All it takes is for a certain number of users to flag the photos as obscene and the photos are taken down. They are a huge company with a massive amount of photos. It’s just not probable that every single photo that is flagged is first reviewed by a person before it is taken down. It is most likely automated.

What really needs to change is the general public’s feelings about breastfeeding. If we could get everyone to consider it as beautiful as we see it, then I believe less breastfeeding photos would be flagged as obscene or nudity.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=508058745 Kendra Hunsaker

They deleted many of my breastfeeding pictures and most of my tasteful pro maternity photos. They are so lame when it comes to this. It shows what the world has come to. Teenagers are allowed to parade around in clothes that barely cover their sexual areas yet mothers are shunned if they show the most natural thing in the world.

  • http://profiles.google.com/kkrohnert Kelley Krohnert

Technically, their policy is that they only consider breastfeeding photos nudity if there is nippy showing, so photo B should have been the only one that they could delete under their own guidelines. But in reality, they seem to delete any photos that people complain about, so I assume someone complained about photo A, so that’s the one that they saw and deleted. If someone complains about photo B, it will likely be deleted also.

Facebook has been a real ass about breastfeeding photos, deleting photos, users, and pages without warning like crazy in the past.

  • Momof6

Honestly I do see a difference and it has nothing to do with skin color. In photo A both breasts are visible and the baby is clearly only using one. That means the second byways is just nudity and that violates the TOS. I breastfeed….but I don’t think it’s appropriate to show nudity, even if there is a baby involved.

  • Donovan

It’s not really Facebook that finds and deletes them, it’s the very friends you are connected to that anonymously flag them as inappropriate. If enough of them flag the same picture, then Facebook will automatically delete it. No human actually working for Facebook sits there and evaluates pictures unless you are appealing directly to their support department after the fact.

Something similar happened to me regarding flagged postings last year: I had posted news links about police abusing protestors at the G20 summit and someone on my friends list flagged them down because they didn’t agree with my political viewpoints.

    • http://profiles.google.com/kkrohnert Kelley Krohnert

It isn’t automated. I know of people at Facebook whose job is to review any pictures, pots, etc. that get reported as a violation of the TOS. They are told to only remove reported breastfeeding photos that show nipple, but obviously some of them are more than happy to remove any breastfeeding photo.

    • http://twitter.com/SunnyMama831 Sunny

It is not automated. There are a handful of administrators who manually delete photos after seeing them after they receive notice of reports re:offensive/abusive nature. This has been explained to Facebook users by Facebook numerous times.

    • http://twitter.com/SunnyMama831 Sunny

  • puppy and person mama

I REALLY think you are stretching with the “because she’s black” come on! dont turn this into a racist thing it simply diminishes your cause and hurts your credibility.

  • Reikirays

It is 2011 and I breastfed my baby daughter for 54 weeks, I am very proud I did this and I am sure a high percentage of woman on facebook have breastfed their children, it is not obscene, the photos are a mother keeping her child alive, it is no way offensive or in a sexual way, some pictures of females on fb are wearing less, interesting why those pics arent deleted. I have a strong opinion on this as women have been breastfeeding since time began, thats why breasts fill up with milk when our baby is coming! Its human nature. earth mama angel baby is a wonderful site and encourages women to help their babies have the very best start in life, I am disappointed that facebook is really living in the dark ages.

  • Jessi

I personally don’t want to see either of those photos. I have two BF pictures on my FB that have never gotten deleted, simply because I don’t show that much skin. *shrug*

  • Ethologicmom

Okay I am getting pissed too! I sent a suggestion to FB. I’m getting sick of it but I guess if we have to keep doing it, well then, I’m in!

  • http://profiles.google.com/lanier0761 Georgette Blackford

This happened to me today and I am livid. The picture was of me breastfeeding my child on my wedding day. How dare someone suggest that breastfeeding my child openly is a pornographic act.

  • Lisa

Those pictures are beautiful! Not something that should be hid. I would be comfortable with my children seeing these pictures because it’s a natural beautiful thing.

  • TT

….and this is why I am deleting my facebook account.

  • http://twitter.com/PDXPirateQueen Black Anne

My initial thought even before I read the whole article but read that photo A was deleted and not B was that there WAS a racial issue. Because out of the 2, I would have thought B would get flagged otherwise. There was a bit of nipple area showing in B, and the the baby’s hand in photo A is providing “tasteful discretion” for the easily offended. The angel wings also make it seem like more of an art-style photo than just a breastfeeding snapshot.

Either the person who reviewed it for FB has racist leanings, even if unconscious–or, FB is actually just responding to viewer’s flags without consideration. In which case, the viewers flagging this over the other have racial issues. I’m sorry–but it’s just the elephant in the middle of room here, and I going to point it out.

  • Shish_dish

It just aint right. i’de probably be less mad/irritated if they were both deleted for showing part of a breast.(Ie still be mad/irritated regardless) But its fairly clear that its because of race. How awfull!!

  • Nikkidee1980

Agree with Donovan….it issomeone manually reporting that individual phot and fb do not even check they just delete as it has been flagged……

  • Autumn_bowles

Well how come all of these tattoo pages have half naked women on them. Or how about the people that have THEMSELVES just about naked as a profile picture.?

  • http://healthhomehappy.com Cara

Saw this post via cheeseslave. Inspired me to finally do those canvas prints for our bedroom of me nursing my then 1yo. I tend to be a little more clothed on FB, but I think nursing pictures are beautiful :)

  • Myleedallas

O but. Facebook will allow young girls. To post pics of themselves in swim suits with the boobs showing n cleavage showing just as much? And facebook will allow young girls 2 post pics of themselves with their legs spread holding pool stix between them. In a bikini and their crotch is nearly hanging out? Facebook thinks these pics of mothers nursing isn’t beatufil or appropriate, but those pics of young girls r?? Y r we making something so amazing like nursing into something sexual? But allowing something sexual 2 b looked at as something “beautiful?” This sight is sooooo messed up!

  • Guest

The people at Facebook should be educated about the Surgeon General’s Call to Action. Breastfeeding is normal and people have seen women nurse since the beginning of time. I wonder if women who work at Facebook have support to pump at work. AOL corporate has a wonderful Well Baby program that supports breastfeeding. It would be great if Facebook learned about the Business Case for Breastfeeding and how breastfeeding is smart, healthy and helps lower medical costs. Facebook doesn’t seem to understand that breasts are functional. No one would be here today if our ancestors didn’t breastfeed. A quote from the Surgeon General’s Call to Action Executive Summary, “One of the most highly effective preventive measures a mother can take to protect the health of her infant and herself is to breastfeed. However, in the U.S., while 75 percent of mothers start out breastfeeding, only 13 percent of babies are exclusively breastfed at the end of six months. . . The success rate among mothers who want to breastfeed can be greatly improved through active support.
Given the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of mothers and children, it is critical that we take action across the country to support breastfeeding.”

  • Heather

just sent a suggestion to FB… this is ridiculous!!! I can’t believe breastfeeding is even an issue!!! A mama feeding her baby is obscene??? What about all the pics girls post of themselves (and their girly bits) while on spring break or partying or whatever? So sad… this is really a disappointment FB!!!!

  • Kris

they “missed” the other, it wouldn’t appeal to sexual deviants/perverts. although, natural & beautiful. it is also private! would you want some low-life scum “self-pleasuring” to the picture of you nurturing/nursing your beautiful bundle of joy?! our bodies are sacred. & not to be shared with the world!

  • Kris

photo b is focused on a happy baby snuggled by the mama. “a” looks like breasts

  • Kris

yes, you share your body with your baby & your “spouse (or “what have you”) but it should end their, besides trustworthy medical professionals.

  • S_underwood2009

they delete this but baby killers can put pictures of japan eating aborted babies up and its OK???? this is bs if you ask me!

  • LadyAntoun

Could it be because one baby appeared to be smiling and enjoying the attention? How sad is THAT!

  • Ahallene

I delivered my Son on the 18th of March of this year. My husband took a picture of me breast feeding our newborn son and Posted it on Facebook. It was deleted too. Plus we had hate emails about posting such a sexual act. I am 37 years old. Breast feeding is natural. I was no where near a sexual act. I was giving my son breast milk. Personaly I feel that this day in age its wrong for us Moms to cover up and not show what is natural. I am so sorry that other woman are having problem’s like this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/blanca.olivo Blanca Iris Olivo

I don’t understand why photo (A) would be deleted and not photo (B)..I for one hope there is NOT a racial reason behind it all.. I being a breastfeeding mom myself think both these photos are very beautiful after all these moms are just feeding their precious and adorable babies…
I feel that the men and women who can’t stand to see a photo like these without thinking sexual should not have an online network account…Grow up people!

  • Sheri

I am pro-breastfeeding. I simply don’t think it needs to be so ‘in-your-face’. I don’t think it needs to occur in the restroom, but I think that a cover is appropriate. I don’t agree with comparing it to urinating/defecating. It is more like manners. I don’t chew with my mouth open or talk with my mouth full because it is good manners. No one wants to see the food I have in my mouth. I don’t want to see someone breastfeeding their babe with the boob hanging out. Why can’t we be considerate of others while we do what needs to be done?
