Why Does Earth Mama Package Skincare Products in PET Plastic Containers?

by moonmavis828 on June 14, 2011

Earth Mama Angel Baby loves and trusts  The Soft Landing, experts on plastics and toxins, so we were delighted to hear this story from Joanie, one of TSL’s best and brightest Safe-tists.

In our house, we use Earth Mama Angel Baby products for so many uses – Angel Baby Bottom Balm for cuts and scrapes, Natural Nipple Butter for dry skin or chapped lips and Mama Bottom Spray for quick pain relief for road rash from those nasty falls on pavement to name a few.

After falling down one day, my son grabbed his arm in pain. I gave it a kiss and sent him on his way, thinking I had dealt with it. He obviously thought differently… After a few minutes of entirely too much silence I went to investigate.

Upon entering the room, I saw he had globs of smeary stuff slathered on his arm (and face for good measure). He quickly announced his arm felt better. To my relief, I saw he had a tub of Mama Bottom Balm opened beside him. In his eyes, it was a natural choice for his self-medication.

I was able to rest easy and enjoy the moment knowing that it was made from safe ingredients and would not be harmful if ingested. And was packaged in a safe plastic #1 tub that would not break from an accidental dropping like many glass bottles I’ve used in the past.

This is just another reason why Earth Mama Angel Baby is one of The Soft Landing’s favorite picks.

Which leads into a question we get asked a lot: Why Does Earth Mama Package Their Skincare Products in PET Plastic Containers?

Earth Mama Angel Baby’s commitment to honor the earth and her valuable resources extends to our packaging as well as our natural and organic ingredients. Earth Mama is even the proud recipient of the BRAG (Business Recycling Award Group) for our green practices, and we are always looking for ways to better what we do. At this point, the plastic PET bottles and jars Earth Mama uses are the safest containers for both our products and our customers. Our containers are colored to keep out harmful UV rays. The PET we use is the most readily recyclable and the safest plastic manufactured.

We’ve asked our trusted expert at The Soft Landing to weigh in on our use of PET:

In some cases, PET makes an excellent alternative to glass. PET bottles and jars not only weigh less and recycle well, they provide a necessary measure of safety for products that are carried in diaper bags and stored around the bathtub. PET has been shown to store skincare products containing essential oils remarkably well because it has a high permeability resistance rating. This is necessary because essential oils are powerful substances with a myriad of properties and potencies. When mixed with a carrier (lotion, oil, balm or salve), the essential oil’s potency is diluted. While the essential oil’s capacity to infuse the lotion, oil, balm or salve with aroma and herbal attributes is not diminished, its capacity to damage plastic is.

Earth Mama Angel Baby products were originally packaged in glass, until we got reports of breakage, and found out a woman was cut opening a jar of Natural Nipple Butter that had broken in transit. The last thing we want to do is hurt a mama with sore nipples! And we know how containers can end up bumping and slipping around changing tables and bathrooms, and can end up in little mouths too, so we choose to package our products in tumble and teething  resistant plastic jars.

Our opinion is that glass presents a much bigger safety concern than plastic especially for those babies that think it’s a toy and bang it on the mirror. And as always, we’re looking for the safest, purest way to keep mamas and babies happy!
