An interview by Peggy O’Mara with Melinda Olson, founder and Mama-in-Charge at Earth Mama®
Many of the mamas at Earth Mama Angel Baby have experienced baby loss along with baby joy. We offer this space to Mama Michelle, to tell her story to help heal her own heart, to commiserate, and by so doing to encourage other mamas to share their stories.
Q: What is Stillbirth?
A: Stillbirth is the death of an infant in-utero and past 20 completed gestational weeks. The majority of these deaths occur at or near full term — they are otherwise healthy babies that die shortly before or during birth. More than 26,000 babies are stillborn in the United States each year.
I have never met any person who has not been touched by baby loss. Women who have been pregnant and have lost a baby are most often tended to only as grieving women. But their bodies experience many of the same physical discomforts as other postpartum women and these physical reminders of their lost babies further add to the pain of their loss.
